Vacation Projects, Baking, Street Reconstruction #19 and More
I've been busy this past week, resting and recreating takes a lot of time and effort. I'm on my first real vacation in a year since being new at a job and other than having Covid when I was on vacation last September. As usual, a staycation to take care of little projects and other things without the interruptions of work. So far I've gotten a few things done and we've had nice weather, for the most part. There's a lot to say so I may jump around a bit, and I'll likely add a break due to the length once I add pictures.
Vacation Start
I started this vacation by going to my Mom's on Saturday. We got a few little things done for her, but it was more about spending the time, I think. I was just there a few weeks ago, but an overnight visit allows for more time and relaxation while catching up on what's going on in her life. I got back to town mid-day Sunday and I don't think I did much the rest of the day.
Lots more after the break!

Easter This-And-Thats
I haven't really been in a writing mood recently. I managed to post about the pavilion, but there are a few other topics I've been meaning to mention so time to sit, type and see what happens.
- Today is Easter, but this doesn't mean much to us. I had a paid holiday for Good Friday and my wife and I may venture out later today, as we tend to do on Sundays, but will have to check ahead to see what's open. I was going to go down to my Mom's yesterday as my sister and her kids are there this weekend, but things to do and I've been real sick of driving lately so I stayed home.
- My wife was laid off from her job this past week. She found out about it 2 months ago, so had to endure all that time knowing, but meanwhile her anniversary came and went so she got all her time off back which will be paid out, and a severance package as well. Another bad decision by a terrible company that keeps losing contracts, but it was her career. She does not plan to look for a new job until her dad dies, and we're in a good enough position she can do that.
- Also this past week we had to take Basil to the vet twice. He'd lost weight, had a UTI and we already know he gets crystals real bad. He'd also stumbled at times, and started withdrawing from us and eating less. He got an antibiotic shot, a pain shot, and was already on medicine for hyperthyroidism but that dose got doubled. It's taken several days but he does appear to be acting normal and feeling much better now, thankfully. And today both the cats turn 13 years old.
- We recently bought two new computers, a laptop for my wife since she had to turn in the one she was using and a desktop tower for me because of the display driver issue this one has, plus it often shuts itself off. Never while I'm using it, but while it's in sleep mode, and it seems to be happening more. Both are made by Lenovo, a new brand to us but great reviews so we just went for it. I'm going to have to take my wife's in for help getting it out of S-mode - Microsoft's new security that goes overboard in trying to save you from yourself. I just hooked up the desktop and got that going briefly, and thankfully I don't have it on this one. I did hook the old computer back up because I have some work to do before making the switch.
- I've taken a few weekends off from baking recently, but I did make a cheesy garlic bread yesterday that I saw in a ToYoube video. It just looked so good, so I made it and it was, but it made a mess of the oven. I used a frozen bread dough loaf so it was quicker and easier for me, but this is one of those recipes that was fun to try but I may never make it again.
We still may get out this afternoon, but it is raining now and the day seems destined for rest and relaxation indoors. I hope everyone is having a wonderful Easter weekend.

First Fire and Bat Shit
I had my first fire pit of the season on Friday night. I was out there early, well before dark, as I didn't want to be out there very late.
It was a nice evening, cool but not cold, and the winds were light. I got all the little stick litter burned up that had accumulated in the fire pit since last fall.
The lilac that I had to remove for the fence installation last spring got cut into smaller pieces to burn, but is a bit wet yet.
And I forgot about a pile of sticks from neighbor Jane's small trees that were hanging over our driveway by the garage. I'll have to get those next time.
The moon was a day away from being full, and nice to see the last two solar lights, which I left out all winter, continue to be working well.
I was happily surprised to see bat shit under the bat house on the back of the garage. And happier to realize that it was indeed guano and not bird shit as they've tried to build a nest on top of the bat house in years past. I did not see any bats in it that night or the next day when I took these pictures, but I will be checking. After several years with just a rare visitor or two, I'm very pleased the bat house is getting used.

Spring Porch And Dishwasher Ending
The porch warms quite nicely on sunny days during spring and fall. The cats love the warmth and access again while we welcome the warmth into the house as the porch will need to close again around sunset. Temperatures this week will be nice, even up to the º70F range on Friday. Still, don't trust March.
![]() |
The porch, mostly neglected over winter, will need a cleanup. |
One thing I haven't kept up on here is our new dishwasher; yes, there was a problem. Within a week we noticed water under the sink. Upon further inspection, it was leaking about a half cup of water every time we ran it, and from what I could see - and I'm too old and broken to be getting under sinks like that - it was coming from the connection between the hose from the dishwasher and the air gap that rises above the sink. We got the company's installer back out to look at it and he concluded it was an issue with a defective hose and they would be in touch. After a week, I called to get an update. It was handled as a warranty issue so the new hose part was coming from LG, and LG would have someone out to fix it. A week later, that day came and their guys agreed with my assertation that the connection was the issue, and they fixed it easily. I was initially impressed with this company, the availability of product and ease of installation. Still, it got corrected somewhat timely and at no cost to us, so I guess we're happy for now.
I've been ill since I first recognized last Thursday afternoon. It's not been a good several days this week but I feel I must be on the better side of it by now, though I'm still getting symptoms if I'm late taking the cold meds. Never the less, I must get back to work. But I know what I'm scheduled for tomorrow and I couldn't ask for much better for a first day back from this.

Cold
On Friday it got up to 50ºF, while today and tomorrow will hover just above and below 0ºF.
Before last winter I got a warming pad for the cats, and they do seem to appreciate it. Often.

January This-And-Thats
Well, time to break the seal with the first new post of 2025. The holidays have come and gone, and we've settled back into daily life here. I don't have any big news or anything like that, and I haven't done one of these posts in a while, so time to start typing and see what spills out onto the page.
- I've been baking quite a bit again recently, though still only on the weekends. Most recently I made cinnamon rolls again, though this recipe is a bit of a cheat as I used the frozen bread dough. Still, they turned out very well and were a nice, sweet treat with whipped cream cheese frosting. I also made another batch of flatbread yesterday, and for the first time in a while I made the classic baguette recipe that I used to make all the time. Also yesterday, I tried a new whole wheat baguette recipe that I modified a bit from a ToYoube video. While it tastes good, I did not get the rise from them that I should have so wound up with skinny baguettes. I believe the water was too warm, though I waited for it to cool some it evidently was not long enough and likely killed some of the yeast. I should know better by now, but I'll make a few tweaks and try this recipe again soon.
- We had Kate's van in for new tires last week, so another hefty bill. Thankfully the brakes are still good for some time so we didn't have those done. Now, my light just came on in my car so I'll have to get it in for an oil change soon. Always something...
- Sometime during the last week the last of the pumpkins on the stump were fully consumed. Though we've had cold, we've not had a whole lot of snow here yet (*knock wood) so they haven't been buried much. I'm fine with not much snow, but come spring we'll miss the water if we continue like this. I sometimes feel bad for putting our veg compost in the bin rather than leaving it out for the critters, but we do not need to attract more animals to our yard.
- The latest project update for our street reconstruction just tells us that trees will be planted in spring, and they still plan on going ahead with the bike/pedestrian bridge over the creek, scheduled for summer this year. I still believe it is a waste of our taxpayer dollars as there is a bridge 2 blocks north and 2 blocks south of the site. This current city administration has plowed ahead with unpopular projects and I highly doubt will win re-election. But I still can't fathom how our voters approved the city to raise our property taxes above state-mandated limits - and with no end date!
- Last month we replaced the suet feeder with a double suet feeder for winter, though we seem to get less birds now. Perhaps they migrated or just have different habits for winter. But we have been getting more woodpeckers visiting, which is kind of neat. I'd also consider a hummingbird feeder next spring as I know they're around and nice to watch.
- I bought my wife a birthday present recently, for a week from today. I couldn't get it through Amazin' because she would see the notifications, so I went through another popular online retailer. It was pretty expensive and the box is oddly shaped, so I never figured it would be delivered in its original box, but it was. And my wife retrieved it, when delivered, so she knows what it is now. But she said she didn't look closely and does not want it early. She expects it on her birthday, and wrapped, so that's what she'll get. I was kind of proud of the gift and I hope she truly likes it. Maybe I'll share what it is after next week.
- Playoff football is upon us. Ohio State and Notre Dame will battle next week for the college championship, and the NFL playoffs began this week. My beloved Packers will be playing the Eagles this afternoon and I'll be watching the game closely and cheering on my team. Go Packers!
- The day after my wife's birthday is inauguration day. He's already distracting from false promises he made while campaigning ($2 gas, cheaper groceries, no taxes on overtime, etc.), the things that made many people vote for him. Why they think these rich, white men care about them is beyond me. Oh, well, what's done is done. The circus is about to begin.

Street Reconstruction Part 17 & More
I'm thinking all that is left is for the extra poles to be removed and trees planted in spring, but they may surprise me with something I didn't think of again. Happily, it appears people are heeding the signs and only parking on the other side since I'm not sure how many neighbors looked into the work to be done as I did and knew about this change. And while I'm happy parking is on the other side, that means I'll have to back out a bit more carefully on this narrower street since we're pretty much guaranteed to have a car across the street now, and it may be my wife's at times.
When I got home from my Mom's on Thanksgiving Day I caught this fat squirrel eating from the frozen pumpkins on the stoop, picture taken from the car. Well, they lasted out front for about a month and a half, through Halloween and Thanksgiving, so it was time to put them in back and let them decompose or be eaten.I've had trouble with my display driver on this computer so haven't used the trail cams lately as reviewing all that video does bad things, but you can still see the squirrels eat up our pumpkin from a couple years ago here. Question: Does anyone know if you can download a new display driver? I haven't found anything when I looked, so I fear I may need to get a new computer to fix the issue. And yes, the driver is fully updated.
I placed the pumpkins on the rotting stump in back, near the frozen bird bath. (We've been below the freezing point for several days now, though we might manage to get just above tomorrow so we can get some rain that can then freeze for us. Wonderful.) Whatever the squirrels leave of the pumpkins can help nourish the wildflower seeds we plan to spread on the stump again next year.
After the break is just some recent baking, if interested.

Street Reconstruction Part 16 & Miscellaneous
It's late, but I wanted to share the latest update, however small. Yesterday, temporary no parking signs showed up all along our side of the street. Apparently to give the regular street sign installers more time? Who knows.

For The Birds
But now we have a local flock of sparrows that have been quite used to it. Not just sparrows, we've also seen chickadees, wrens and young woodpeckers, at least, and I'm sure other species have visited. And no more issues with squirrels trying to get into the seed feeder or hanging out underneath for what's dropped anymore.
I'm not sure if neighbor Jane knows or not, but they like to hang out in her front bush and on her roof en masse at certain times of the day, taking turns at the feeder. Below is some of them, but they extend all along the peak of her roof and chimney, as well. Probably a good amount on our roof, too.

Flatbread, Flowers And Hamish
We had gyros some time ago from a delivery restaurant. I got the regular gyro meat and my wife hasn't cared for their chicken version so tried the veggie, which is just more of the gyro veggies in a pita. Unsatisfied, she recently wanted to try to make homemade ground beef gyros (since we still have lots to use before we can order another side of beef) with a Greek seasoning. She found a recipe and it turned out really better than expected. That seasoning also seemed to work as a binder so the patties were able to be cut similar to regular gyro meat and made for a rather good meal. And we love tzatziki sauce! The only downside was the store-bought pita bread, of which only one choice is ever available at the local grocery store, as it is way too dry and bland.
So, for the leftovers I tried a flat bread recipe that I had saved but not yet made. In fact, I hadn't tried to make any kind of flatbread previously, but I found this so quick and simple, and yet so good. Like my homemade baguette, pizza dough and cheese pennies, flatbread will now surely be a regular homemade food in this house, though I may experiment with other recipes/techniques, too.Otherwise, I've just been so tired this week. I don't want to discuss my job here, but I've been doing it now for over 8 months without taking any time off for myself, only a few sick days when I've been unable to work. I have a couple days off soon here which will hopefully recharge me until my week off in September. After that I'll have to see what little time off I have left for the rest of the year and plan accordingly. That's all I want to say about that for now, since I'm in a rather crispy state of mind at the moment.
Anyway, the tiger lilies by the porch are mostly waning, but for each end which are a different type and will continue flowering for a bit. The tree stump area is doing pretty well with some of the wildflowers on the old stump starting to do what they do. The day lilies are big and strong and many smaller plants are maintaining, at the least. The newly planted bushes seem to be doing okay but not really taking off yet, but hopefully by next year.
The two sunflowers by the back corner of the garage are still doing their thing and growing tall. About a week ago the remaining stalks of the peony next to it were bitten off by a critter, which is unusual for peony but wouldn't be for the sunflowers next to it at that stage so thankfully keeping that cage has kept them going. That peony may not even come back next year as the lily of the valley has mostly strangled its roots, it seems.
And lastly for today, I've not posted any cat pictures in a while and I really ought to more. After the break is Hamish, tonight, waiting on the back of the chair for me to come into the computer room and type this.

Cable Update and Cheese Pennies
![]() |
A couple hawks with a snack, across the street yesterday. |
Then, at the end of the call, he brought up one piece of equipment we supposedly still had - one of their modems. I was pissed. I told him it had been several years since we returned that modem, so long ago I couldn't remember what year or where I returned it. He opened an inquiry and said it could take up to 72 hours. Meanwhile, I looked up when we bought our first modem from Amazin' and it was March of 2014, so I would have returned their equipment by early April that year at the latest, over ten years ago.
Thankfully, later that night, I received an email that stated they have "completed your equipment research request in alignment with your expectations." As far as I'm concerned, that better be the end of it. Fuck Spectrum, I'll never be a customer of theirs again.
Meanwhile, I've continued to make cheese pennies every so often. I'm finding it easiest to make multiple batches at once to have them available in the freezer. I baked most of the last of a roll of mild cheddar cheese pennies yesterday, and today for the freezer I made bleu cheese (for the first time), parmesan, and sharp cheddar with cayenne cheese penny rolls. (I've also made swiss cheese pennies before.)
Our first-place Brewers are playing the last-place Cubs this weekend. It's always fun to beat the Cubs, especially this year. Rain again last night and now too windy tonight for a fire, so I'm going to kick back and watch the game this afternoon and enjoy a quiet evening in. Have a good weekend, everyone.

Mysteries of Mud and Thunder
There is one picture I forgot to post yesterday, but I took better pics today. It appears that some animal left their muddy imprint on the window of our back door recently. Had to be a larger animal, probably attracted by seeing the cats on the porch, and our recent weather would explain its muddiness. Realistic possibilities when considering the height of it could be another cat, a rare loose dog, raccoon, opossum, or possibly a fox. But what animal and/or behavior would leave this kind of mark? Wide view to the right for context, and close up below.
The symmetry and splatter marks are curious, so now I'm thinking maybe a muddy bird hit the window? I'd like to hear all theories!
And we had an interesting phenomenon later last night, we heard a constant thunder for at least 15-20 minutes, maybe even longer, from the storms passing just north of us.
There was a tornado watch at the time, but none reported. Have you ever heard or heard of this kind of continuous thunder?

Fire Pit Visitors and Zoo
Shortly after starting the fire on Friday night I had two interesting visitors, as a welcome distraction. A Brown-headed Cowbird couple came by, he to keep watch while she foraged along the flowerbed, not many feet away from me and the fire. A good start to the weekend.
I visited my Mom again on Saturday, and we've kept busy today with a brunch downtown with friends and getting some more plants to cover the bare ground patches still along the fence and between the new bushes. New batteries installed for new solar lights that came with bad batteries, and more spikes installed on the fence to discourage squirrel damage. Four on top of the fence in strategic areas and now four on the cross bar beneath them as they would just go around the spikes on top otherwise, I hope this helps.
I got the opportunity to visit our zoo for work last week. It had been several years since I last visited, one of those things that are so close and easy to do yet neglected, taken for granted. It's still an animal jail but they do continue to make improvements to their habitats. Two of us had several clients to keep an eye on and wheelchairs to push, but I still managed to take several pictures, I'll put some after the break.

Springing
Yesterday was a beautiful day; sunny, breezy, warm and the second day of the year with windows wide open. Clouds started moving in about the time I took these pictures, and it's overcast and rainy today. The grass is now green almost everywhere, but while I've used the strimmer around the edges I have yet to mow. Many trees have leaves opening, others still just buds. Flower beds are filling in nicely but, as usual, the tree stump area needs some work - especially since the new fence.
In the gardens we have garlic coming up in one and raspberries in another. There's still some strawberry plants in one but like growing tomatoes we've given up due to the critters. And there is one empty that we'll just have to see what happens when we get plants and seeds.
I'm still waiting to have the first real fire pit of the year. Rain, wind and cold have kept me inside so far.
And the cats liked the warmth and open windows of the porch, as Basil demonstrates here.
Things are looking up, I think. At least weather-wise.

It's Been Awhile...
The Packers just won with a fourth quarter comeback, and you can probably tell from the picture that I was much more attentive to the game than Hamish.
My wife and I both did some baking today, and often my Mom and I text during the games so I was sending her pictures as I made baguettes. They turned out pretty good though I've been experimenting with my technique, so I may share that here soon. Otherwise, back to the grind in the morning and fiscal year is just a week away so the headaches are coming.
We did go out for a fancy dinner with friends Terry and Becky last night. The parking lot was between the restaurant and the lake, so we parked right up to the lake and I got pictures of when we arrived and when we left that we found interesting, if not quite level. I'll put those after the break. Cheers, everyone.

100º Sunflower Baking
I'm not sure what the official numbers were, but I saw 100ºF actual temperature and 117ºF as the 'feels like' temperature on Wednesday. It was over 90% humidity in the morning but was down to mid-40's at the hottest part of the day, which is still more than enough to be very palpable at that temperature. It was our first 100 degree day since July 2012, in a worse drought that year. Thursday was much the same, just a few degrees less. Kate dug up an old pan to put out with water for the critters so we did that and I threw some peanuts on the stump area to help bring them in so I could put out the trail camera to see what happened.
This new trail camera shows the temperature on the pictures but not the video, which is disappointing. I've searched through the settings a few times, but the option just isn't there. The video below is clips with pictures here and there, all in timeline order, of that time of the week so you can take a moment to consider the temperature and time of day. The water pan wasn't used a whole lot yet, but it was a new thing, too.
Other than that, last post was the sunflower at its peak. I now have a bungee cord helping stabilize it as it appeared to be leaning more, and with the heat and heaviness of the bloom the top is looking a bit more droopy. And if you look close, the small one does have an odd, small attempt at a bloom.
![]() |
You can't tell, but yes, I've been watering. |
I also did some baking today, trying a new recipe for the second time. It's a very versatile French bread recipe and a full batch makes a lot of dough. This batch I made into 4 burger buns with 4 pepperoni and cheese rolls below those, and hot dog buns and a baguette on the right.
Oh, I was off work for an appointment today, so I had the time. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Greenway Walk
I was this close to capturing the biggest poo bag I've ever seen. From the horse, of course...
We took a walk through the Dixon Greenway on the way to try a new place for lunch on Sunday, but the mounted police picture is from a day or so later on another walk. The native plant restoration project is coming along nicely with many beautiful wildflowers. I'll put a couple pics after the break.

New This, New Thats
I don't believe we've had any rain since I posted about it last, but we did have a couple minor air quality warnings that didn't amount to much. Mostly in the 'Moderate' category so nothing like what we had a couple weeks ago. It's still a thing and still affecting other areas too so we may get another bad spell, we'll see. Anyway, a few new things happening around here lately.
- A couple months ago we got a new vacuum, a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, and boy does it get up the cat hair. We've stuck with Oreck for a long time now, but I'm glad I decided to try another brand. This small house, and I still have to empty it halfway through - and we only have the two rugs, no carpet!
- Speaking of the cats, they got a new cat tree same as the old cat trees. Availability of them have been sporadic, so a year or two ago when I saw it available again I ordered another. We had a nice one when they were young that they outgrew, now we're on the fourth cat tree of this type, one of the few cat trees I've seen that I'd say is for adult cats. They've not been as hard on them as they've gotten older, 11 years old last April, so not sure if we'll need another. The old one from the front windows is now the porch cat tree, I disassembled it just enough to put it back together with the best of the used sisal rope pillars as I've done before. The cat's don't care.
- A few months ago my wife's phone, same as mine at the time, bricked. She just woke up and the phone was dead, but luckily and thanks to Amazin we had her another phone late that very day. Since then, my Pixel 3XL has had a couple hiccups. Nothing major, just acting up slightly, and I was due for an upgrade so I got a new Pixel 7A. Now, transitioning to a new smart phone is always a pain in the butt, right? Not anymore. First off, Google pretty much owns me - gmail, blogger, youtube, chrome, fitbit - all that and more. Much of the reason I got us Pixels last time. But upgrading from an older Pixel to a new one is the easiest transition you can imagine. The new phone showed all the same backgrounds, and all the icons in all the same places like it was the same phone. You have to download them again, but they make that really easy, too. I think I'll be sticking with Pixels as long as I have a smart phone.
- But, on September 14, 2022, Google notified me that I had used 50% of my 15GB storage. Now last week they notified me that was up to 70%. How? I've deleted a ton of old emails and drastically reduced the amount of pictures I take since then. Now I will go through my old pictures I have in Google photos and delete everything unnecessary - I'm up to January 2017. I'd always taken many more pictures than needed so I could pick and choose the best ones, thinking it's all digital anyway, but that seems to have caught up to me. And I DO NOT want to have to pay for storage. The alternative is to just not back up my photos in Google, just on my hard drives. Also a real possibility.
- Not a lot to report on the new trail camera yet. I tried giving it a go a few times with no success until I finally figured out the new SD card had a little switch to protect it that I must have nudged after the first use. It's currently out in the garden watching over the pepper plants which have gotten munched on by critters, likely rabbits, due to how dry it's been. The peppers are now caged again and I haven't had any other use for the trail cam yet so I've let it be for now.
- Later this week I have new sandals coming, a new kitchen faucet, and a new baguette baking pan. I found a new recipe for french bread that is supposed to be very versatile and it makes a lot of dough so I expect to have a couple baguettes, some buns or rolls, try my hand at pepperoni rolls, and maybe a round loaf. So a day of baking coming up this weekend.
The garlic will be early this year due to the weather. My wife checked it last weekend and it was almost ready to come out of the ground, so we'll be checking it again this weekend. And the sunflowers are doing good. Well, one is doing great, another not too bad, and two others seem stunted but so far I'm letting them grow to see if anything will happen. I just went out to grab a picture, and it is now officially taller than me! As you see here, the leaves always seem to get a bit droopy in the late afternoon sun, but they always come back. Cheers!
Correction edit: My wife picked all the garlic while I was on my walk this afternoon. I just noticed now!
