Happy New Year 2026

Happy 2026, everyone.  I slept in this morning, New Year's Eve day, and it was nice.  I was awake for a bit early, but stayed in bed and looked at my phone until I finally slept a couple more good hours.  Chasing a good, full night's sleep has been a constant for me in 2025.

Kate and I went out and had a nice lunch today, then came home to get into comfy clothes and bump up the thermostat.  It is a very gray day today (again), with snow flurries as well. The plan for us is to make beef tenderloin steaks with potatoes or pasta for dinner, with the newer Spinal Tap movie and a sweet treat to follow.  She is feeling a bit under the weather so will likely go to bed at a normal time or earlier while I will try to stay up and ring in the new year.  I may watch Dick Clark's Rockin' NYE on television or find some other interesting show for the countdown.  Anyway, just a quiet night in for us and likely the same for tomorrow.

How did you ring in the New Year?

Winter Solstice Fire Pit 2025

The winter solstice was yesterday morning, and since I put in the fire pit in 2018 I've liked celebrating the occasion with a fire, when possible.  Temperatures never got above freezing yesterday, they stayed just a bit below, so it was definitely chilly but very manageable.

I shoveled some snow out of the fire pit and considered melting more with the garden torch but there were sticks in the pit already so I felt I had a good enough base to build the fire.  I didn't want to be out there long and it would get colder after the sun went down so I got started around 3:30 in the afternoon, about an hour before sunset.  I built the small fire up right away, then basically just let it burn down until I could go inside.  I think it's pretty safe to say this will be the last fire pit of the year, but, of course, now that I said that...

I made a couple discoveries while I was out there.  First, I realized that I left the gnome outside under the lilac.  I didn't take him into the garage for winter like I usually do when doing the fall cleanup, but I still may sometime.  We've had him for quite some time now and he's starting to look a bit faded and rough.  I always have my eye out for garden gnomes but haven't found one to replace him yet.  I have a smaller one that's been living on the porch all year that I may put out come spring.

The next discovery was bat guano under the bat house.  I don't know exactly how long it's been there, but it's a bit too cold for the bats to be out and about this month so I'm guessing since October, or maybe early November.  Hopefully they found a warmer place to hibernate, but not my attic!

Saturday started a run of 10 out of 16 days off for me.  We do have some holiday obligations, but I welcome the time off.  Next post will be holiday wishes, so I may get that written up and scheduled soon so I don't forget.  Happy solstice, everyone.

Mid-December Ramblings

We've had a few more snows since last post but nothing quite as significant.  Everything around us is holiday themed and we've had plenty of cold.  This weekend's highs are about 6ºF, or negative 14ºC.

The cats have been utilizing their warming pad often, and my wife had been using our heating pad on her back for several days this past week after hurting it shoveling snow on Tuesday.

I brought in the trail camera a week ago since everything was snow covered and not showing much activity.  The SD card just shows a bunch of squirrels nibbling away, or maybe the same one appearing over and over, not sure.  I was worried the batteries may have died, but it was still working when I brought it in despite every picture and video showing a red X on the icon, lower right, since I put it out about a month ago.

We've been making our holiday plans and gathering gifts.  I have a lot more shopping to do, but only for my wife.  And I have to keep in mind she has a birthday in January, too.

Kate noticed this hole along the side of the driveway yesterday.  It appears some critter needed to create a home for the night.  My guess is an opossum, but we may never know.

That's pretty much the highlights.  We're just making our way to the holidays and trying to stay warm.  Kate still has things to get in order for her dad's passing, but that takes time so she will be dealing with plenty well into the new year.  She has my full support to take all the time she needs as her life forward will be completely different than the last decade plus.

I'll have Wednesday and Thursday off for the Christmas and New Year holidays but will have to work those Fridays before the weekends allow me two more days off.  I'll take it, of course.  And yes, I'm reading news every day but it's mostly so absurd to me that I have to disassociate from it.  That's about all I'm going to say about that right now.  I'll probably be back here before the holidays, but leading up to them I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season as they see fit.  Cheers, everyone.

Snow Day!

As we got closer to Saturday the projected snow totals got higher, and now here we are.  We planned on staying in all day due to the weather anyway, and since it was a holiday weekend and still no responsibilities tomorrow, we had a bit of fun with it.

Homemade potato skins for the final Badger football game this afternoon.  And homemade-from-a mix chocolate chip cookies for dessert.  (Not to mention finishing off Thanksgiving's banana cream pie.)

And given a snow day's time to spare I decided to make a big and bubbly focaccia bread.  It was absolutely airy, crispy and delicious!  Don't worry, we froze half for warming up at a later time.  We're only two people, after all.

But it was oh, so delicious!

And as of right now, it's snowed at least 7 inches and probably even more more with the end several hours away.  It may still be snowing when I get up tomorrow.

We've cleared the front and back steps about four times, plus knocking the snow weight off the front arborvitae, while doing a full snow removal twice so far.  By mid-morning we should be able to do a final cleanup, then hope for sunshine to help because the temperatures won't.  Welcome back, Winter, my old friend.

Thanksgiving 2025

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.  Today will be spent with my wife's family for a while, followed by sports on TV and banana cream pie.

My wife and I were going to go to my Mom's on Saturday, but now we have a snowstorm coming so I will be going down for a bit tomorrow and Kate will stay behind as she had other plans that day.  So, nothing too exciting around here, I'm just happy for four days off from work.

I've not checked the trail camera yet, but the critters have a ways to go on the pumpkin.  The innards and seeds were the first to go, but somehow I still may not be surprised if a pumpkin vine tries growing next year.  It will surely get weeded out early in favor of wildflowers, anyway.

Enjoy the day, everyone.

Happy Halloween 2025

We had a little different look for Halloween this year with some new decorations.

Same skeleton as last year hanging on the door but some new little lights I got for free after last Halloween, ghosts in the kitchen window and 2 strings of pumpkins on the right railing.  The rest is from a dollar store; pumpkinhead on the left of the door and skully on the right, the sign at the bottom of the steps and the window covering.  I did forget to use the flickering flame light bulb, but no matter.  I also never got around to carving the pumpkin, but I have ideas for a trail cam video with the critters in back again.  We also moved the flowers to the porch for the little kids to make it up our stairs more easily.

Originally I ordered a different window covering online then found this one at a dollar store.  What I received from my order was not what I ordered so I was very glad to have this as a backup.  And I like it well enough, but even though I only used black masking (painter's) tape to hold it on, the plastic was so thin it ripped when taking it down so the search will continue next year.

There were very few houses in the neighborhood with any Halloween decorations other than pumpkins and mums, and fewer with lights on to welcome the kids.  We got about 25 trick-or-treaters this year so got rid of a lot of candy, but not all of it.  That sure seems like a lot of walking for only a few giving houses in an area.  I feel a bit sorry for kids these days.

The picture above makes it seem so much brighter than it actually was.  We do have street lights, including one directly across the street, and I can see shadows from a neighbor's front light, across the street and 3 houses down. After the break I altered a picture to more resemble what human eyes saw, and a wider view that also amplifies the light.

I hope everyone had a great Halloween!

Vacation Recap

I was looking through the pictures I took last week and found there weren't many.  I truly did just try to take it easy, and apparently I managed that pretty well.  Yet, there were some highlights so let's see what I can remember.

First off, we'd had fall-like temperatures for a few weeks, but as if on cue the weather started turning nicer and warmer during my vacation.  This looks to last for at least another week, which is good.  It was way too early to have to switch from shorts to pants!

I didn't mention it last post, but there was a bit of a bigger project on my list - actually more of a PITA than "big" - that I chose to ignore all week.  There is a drawer in the kitchen I need to figure out how to fix.  The old, outdated hardware simply wore out and my first fix, didn't, so I do still have that to do but I have a new plan and will get that started this weekend.

I began the week by going to my Mom's on Saturday for the Badger game.  We hung out, I cooked dinner, and I spent the night.  It was nice, but I got some wires crossed in my head about the Packer game that Sunday so left for home earlier than I needed to.  Not a big deal, but another lunch out with Mom would have been nice.

On Monday we had a new rug delivered for the living room, which led to maybe the biggest chore of this vacation.  The new rug was for the living room, so that rug was to move to the bedroom, and that rug was to move to the porch.  So, basically, we had to work backwards; clean up the porch for the rug from the bedroom, clean up the bedroom for the rug from the living room, then clean up the living room for the new (bigger) rug to be placed.  It was certainly good to get the cleaning done, but we wound up moving around most all of our furniture that day.

Some shopping, mowing the lawn, and plenty of time spent with my feet up all week.  Oh, there were a few little jobs done here and there but hardly anything else worth mentioning.  Now that I said that, I did want to mention the dill pickle bread I made.  It was interesting and not bad, a good baking exercise, but I may look for a different recipe if I make similar again.

Most importantly, my wife and I did get to spend some good time together and enjoyed several lunches or dinners out, and several drinks out during the week.  It was nice to spend the time together, but later in the week the less I seemed to do, and that was good, too.  Now, sigh, back to work.

58 & Vacation

I've been on vacation this week, and today I turn 58 years old.  Normally I have a certain main project to do on my vacation, plus a list of other chores to get done.  This vacation I still have that list but no real big project and I'm placing more of a priority on rest and relaxation than getting things done.

My wife got me some Belgian sour beers, Rodenbach and Duchess de Bourgogne, that I may begin to enjoy starting later tonight.  Today we strolled State Street as it had been some time since I'd been downtown, and enjoyed lunch at State Street Brats.  Tonight we plan to meet some friends at Come Back In for food and drinks, then get home in time for the Packers game.

Overall, a good week so far.  I may reflect on this week more at a later time, but for now, all is good.

Madison's Peregrine Falcons

Peregrine falcons are one of the most widely distributed birds in the world, but fascinating none the less.  There is a livestream of a nest on the MG&E building downtown Madison, overlooking Williamson (Willy) Street and Lake Monona.  (The same building with the three tall smokestacks seen in background of this recent post.)  The falcon home page with the livestream is here, if the embed doesn't work or last below.

It's hard to catch them at home sometimes, but you can back up the stream to see them.  I did a deep dive on them recently, pun intended, and they are a fascinating creature.  I'd love to witness the hunt in real life sometime.  A good four minute video is here if interested.  And a good story on the site linked in the previous paragraph of the origins of the nest and happenings since 2009.

*Edit: I just found this page that has livestream links to other peregrine falcon nests at other power plants in Wisconsin.

Labor Day is Monday, so we have a three day weekend.  Today, I made two batches of flatbread this morning, we went out for burgers for lunch and now I'm watching the Brewer game while typing this.  This evening we're going to grill out jerk chicken and I'm hoping to have a fire.  I also need to call my Mom and plan an overnight trip as I have a week off coming very soon.  My wife will have things to do for her dad the next two days for several hours each day, but we'll still have some time to rest and recreate together.

I know I've had some pretty shallow posts recently, but there really hasn't been much to say.  I'll post some pics if I have a fire tonight.  Or if I'm too tired then tomorrow looks like good fire weather, too.

Solstice Fire Pit & Fougasse

It wasn't much of a firepit, but last night I did have a small fire to commemorate the summer solstice.

When I started the wind was 9-10 miles per hour, normally the top of my limit for having a fire since usually the winds lessen steadily after sunset.  But last night the winds were to increase as night came, blowing in some very hot weather for the next few days for us.  Anyway, I got an early start and pretty much just burned the fallen branches and sticks that had accumulated, not even taking the cover off the firewood rack.  It didn't take long until the bigger stuff had burned down and began smoldering.  Smoke was starting to blow everywhere so I had to put the lid on it, which I rarely ever do but it works well to suffocate it at times like this.

Today I tried a new recipe picked by my wife from King Arthur's Big Book of Bread, an Olive-Rosemary Fougasse.

The dough felt good, but was a bit sticky so my first attempt at shaping leaves leaves a lot to be desired.  It came out very tasty, crusty outside with a light and airy crumb.  Not bad, and I may try this again with different flavors.  The recipe called for semolina as the bench flour, so I got some for the first time and I like it a lot.  I may try it for pizza and peel instead of parchment paper next time.

I have another recipe from the book that I may try tomorrow, an everyday wheat bread.  I still use the frozen, store-bought bread dough for my work sandwiches, and sometimes my own flatbread, but I need a good sandwich bread recipe in my repertoire.

Vacation Projects, Baking, Street Reconstruction #19 and More

I've been busy this past week, resting and recreating takes a lot of time and effort.  I'm on my first real vacation in a year since being new at a job and other than having Covid when I was on vacation last September.  As usual, a staycation to take care of little projects and other things without the interruptions of work.  So far I've gotten a few things done and we've had nice weather, for the most part.  There's a lot to say so I may jump around a bit, and I'll likely add a break due to the length once I add pictures.

Vacation Start

I started this vacation by going to my Mom's on Saturday.  We got a few little things done for her, but it was more about spending the time, I think.  I was just there a few weeks ago, but an overnight visit allows for more time and relaxation while catching up on what's going on in her life.  I got back to town mid-day Sunday and I don't think I did much the rest of the day.

Lots more after the break!

Easter This-And-Thats

I haven't really been in a writing mood recently.  I managed to post about the pavilion, but there are a few other topics I've been meaning to mention so time to sit, type and see what happens.

  • Today is Easter, but this doesn't mean much to us.  I had a paid holiday for Good Friday and my wife and I may venture out later today, as we tend to do on Sundays, but will have to check ahead to see what's open.  I was going to go down to my Mom's yesterday as my sister and her kids are there this weekend, but things to do and I've been real sick of driving lately so I stayed home.
  • My wife was laid off from her job this past week.  She found out about it 2 months ago, so had to endure all that time knowing, but meanwhile her anniversary came and went so she got all her time off back which will be paid out, and a severance package as well.  Another bad decision by a terrible company that keeps losing contracts, but it was her career.  She does not plan to look for a new job until her dad dies, and we're in a good enough position she can do that.
  • Also this past week we had to take Basil to the vet twice.  He'd lost weight, had a UTI and we already know he gets crystals real bad.  He'd also stumbled at times, and started withdrawing from us and eating less.  He got an antibiotic shot, a pain shot, and was already on medicine for hyperthyroidism but that dose got doubled.  It's taken several days but he does appear to be acting normal and feeling much better now, thankfully.  And today both the cats turn 13 years old.
  • We recently bought two new computers, a laptop for my wife since she had to turn in the one she was using and a desktop tower for me because of the display driver issue this one has, plus it often shuts itself off.  Never while I'm using it, but while it's in sleep mode, and it seems to be happening more.  Both are made by Lenovo, a new brand to us but great reviews so we just went for it.  I'm going to have to take my wife's in for help getting it out of S-mode - Microsoft's new security that goes overboard in trying to save you from yourself.  I just hooked up the desktop and got that going briefly, and thankfully I don't have it on this one.  I did hook the old computer back up because I have some work to do before making the switch.
  • I've taken a few weekends off from baking recently, but I did make a cheesy garlic bread yesterday that I saw in a ToYoube video.  It just looked so good, so I made it and it was, but it made a mess of the oven.  I used a frozen bread dough loaf so it was quicker and easier for me, but this is one of those recipes that was fun to try but I may never make it again.

We still may get out this afternoon, but it is raining now and the day seems destined for rest and relaxation indoors.  I hope everyone is having a wonderful Easter weekend.

Street Reconstruction Part 18, Burn Day & Blogday

Yesterday morning, shortly before I had to leave for work, we had to scramble to get my car out of the garage and her van into the driveway.  We knew there was no parking on much of the street starting this morning, but they had gotten to work earlier than we expected.  It was time to plant the trees on our street and the next street over.

I grabbed a quick picture after our little fire drill, and after the holes were drilled on the terraces for planting the new trees.  The workman walking by the hole where my wife was parked was a coincidence.  I had no time to try for a better picture as I had to then leave for work.

When I got home, several new trees had been planted.  There's been lots of trees cut down since we moved in, now each had finally been replaced.  And in almost the exact same spots, too.  Not surprising, actually, when you think of the underground utilities going to each house.  My wife said they were easily done by noon, which didn't surprise me with such an early start.

The second picture shows the new tree in front of neighbor Jane's, and not many more.  A similar shot on the other side of the street facing the opposite direction would have shown several more, but neighbors might wonder what I'm doing over there taking pictures, and they all look pretty much the same right now anyway.

Another thought about the street:  If it had to be parking on one side only then I'm very glad its the other side.  Especially on garbage day when the bins are all out.  No parking within 4 feet of a driveway or within 2 feet of the next car, per city rules.  We've not had a big issue yet, Kate and I, but I know others have had to adjust, especially when someone else has guests over.  And I know one neighbor has to park at least one and sometimes two cars all the way up at the top of the street on the next block.  Older and adult kids living with parents clog up much of the parking, at least on this end of the street.

Separate from the street reconstruction, we had another *biennial (*corrected) rite of spring happen.  While I was at work today the city did a controlled burn along the creek.  I'll add those pictures after the break, if anyone would like to take a look.  The banks of the creek won't be this clear for another two years.

And, finally, today is my 16th Blogday.  Still chugging along, after all...

Happy New Year 2025

Good luck to us all, we're going to need it.  Let's hope his visions don't come to fruition.

Party (enjoy your freedoms) while you can!  After all, we have about 3 weeks still until it hits the fan.  Four years ago it was a relief, though a scary time on January 6, when it finally ended.  Now it will begin again, and this time he's angry, fearless, and inexplicably empowered by those he will hurt the most.

But I don't want to dwell on a vengeful orange wanna-be dictator and the hell that is about to be raised.

Sorry to make this political.  A google search for HNY 2025 pics also brought up Project 2025 pics.

I had today off, got some baking and housework done, went out to lunch and now I'm relaxing while watching the Bucks game.  Tonight, my wife and I will enjoy a nice t-bone steak dinner at home and a quiet, early evening.  I may stay up to see midnight, but I don't feel obligated.

No matter what happens in 2025, I wish the best for all of you.  Thanks for visiting.  Cheers!

Merry Christmas 2024

Happy Holiday, everyone.

I'm not sure exactly what I'll do today, but it likely won't be much.  I do have some tedious tasks that I want to get done by the new year, maybe today's the day.

Or I could go out and watch some football that is only on a streaming service that I don't have.  Might depend on what my wife needs to get done.

Whatever you're doing today, I hope it is pleasurable and rewarding.

Merry Christmas.

Winter Solstice 2024

The winter solstice arrived early this morning, hours before I got up.  For several years now I've been having a fire on this day, in cold temperatures and in a bit of snow, but we have both this year.

So, no winter solstice fire pit this year but at least the days will start getting longer.  Very soon here I will be making the drive to Mom's and will be spending the night.  My wife will be staying back and taking care of her dad, as usual.  This week will be especially hard for her with the holidays, as well.  My sister and her family were supposed to arrive there yesterday but they came down sick, and it sounds like my brother and his family will be there for a few hours this evening.   This is our Christmas gathering this year.  Happy solstice, everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend 2024

Happy Thanksgiving weekend, everyone.  A much needed 4 days off from work here.

I wasn't feeling the best yesterday, but I traveled down to my Mom's house.  I wasn't sure if I was getting sick or not so I wore a mask the whole time and cut my visit short, leaving shortly after my sister and nephew got there early afternoon.

My wife made a traditional Thanksgiving spread with a large turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls.  Kate then took some to her dad, but they wound up going to their family gathering.  She's been his caretaker for many years now, and he just gets more difficult as he gets older.  Anyway, there's plenty of leftovers for us to eat, plus she'll make up some freezer meals for her dad.

There's a dusting of snow on the ground and it will be cold, but there are some outside chores I could do.  And we'll see if I have a fire pit tonight or tomorrow, but otherwise the time will be spent inside.  There's a lot of football on the next few days, but otherwise I have some inside chores to do, maybe some baking, and lots of relaxing.  Cheers!

Happy Halloween 2024

The windows mummy is no more this year, but I did get a neat black skeleton with lit eyes to hang on the front door tonight.  I also got a cheap purple spider web that I was hoping to cover from awning to bottom rail but it was way too windy to try and set that up, so it'll be put away for next year.  A flickering flame porch light and a couple squat pumpkins would round out our Halloween look this year.

I had a good day with some Halloween celebrations at work, then getting ready for trick-or-treaters at home.  We'd had great weather the last few days.  I was even able to wear shorts and sandals out and about the last couple days, but today was to be different.

It had been windy recently with a couple nice warm days, but today was more windy, sustained winds 15-20 mph with gusts that can stop you in your tracks.  Thankfully that's easing off a bit tonight, but we've also gotten so much colder with this front coming in.  By morning we'll be near freezing with barely a breeze.

Despite the weather, we had a few more trick-or-treaters than last year, but still only 14 by my count.  We shut it down before 8 tonight, more than a half hour since the last ones.  Gave out less than half of the candy we had, so now we have that problem, too.  Happy Halloween, everyone.
