The New Ace Frehley and Kiss albums

Well, I've been thinking of what to say about both of these new albums. This sums it up: Both albums are exactly what I would have expected. That's not bad, mind you, I have been listening and liking them most of my life (Ace was always my fave). If you like them you should know by now, 35 years later. If not, you may not enjoy these new CDs.

Much more after the break.

A Wonderful Ace Frehley Surprise!

Monday afternoon I started to look through the newspaper from Sunday that I hadn't gotten to yet, when I noticed a picture of Ace Frehley in an upcoming column teaser for Thursday's 77square section. It seems he's playing at the Majestic this Saturday night. I can't believe I hadn't known about it yet. I'm not sure when it was announced, but it must have been very recently. Short story shorter- I had my tickets 20 minutes after I noticed. The first ten minutes was frantically looking for where I could buy tickets!

Yes, I'm excited! Ace Frehley is my first, favorite rock star. Going on 35 years or so. Solo, I have only seen Ace in concert once before. I was on my way to a friend's house in Chicago for the weekend. I heard the show advertised for the next night on some radio station as I was almost at his place. One of the first things I said to my friend was, "Guess what we're doing tomorrow night!"

At the end of the show, I met a girl who was a friend of Ace's girlfriend who got me backstage to meet him. It was fun, just us and the 2 girls in the room, But I'm not sure really who was drunker, him or me. (Me, actually. Also quite starstruck.) In fact, I went down to this girl's place several weeks later when there was a Kiss Convention where Ace was making an appearance. I got to meet him again briefly and even got a real poorly taken pic of me and Ace! That was all about 13-15 years ago.

I'm not planning on meeting him Saturday night, but who knows?..

Here's Ace performing the new single "Outer Space" exactly 1 week ago:

He's done alot of drugs in his time but he claims to be sober these days!

Latest Listening Pleasure 24 - Ace Frehley

I've gotten several new CDs recently, among them:  Andrew Bird released 'Are You Serious.'  Al Jourgensen came back with Surgical Meth Machine and an album by the same name.  Also, I just got Rob Zombie's new album called 'The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser.'

Ace Frehley has also recently released a new album of covers and old favorites, 'Origins Vol. 1.'  He recorded songs he grew up with and that have influenced him.  Among several guest musicians, including Slash, Lita Ford and John 5, is Paul Stanley.  For the first time in 14 years Paul and Ace perform together.  They play on the song 'Fire and Water,' originally done by the band Free. The video for that song was released on Tuesday.  I must admit, as a Kiss fan I'm loving this little reunion.  And the rest of the album is a lot of fun, too.

Listening to Ace so much recently has reminded me of when I saw him back in November 2009.  I did write about it here back then - over a few different posts, but long before I had started wrapping that stuff up into LLP posts.  Well, now Ace is officially on that list.

Here's a video from that November 7, 2009 show at the Majestic Theater here in Madison.  'Parasite' is on the new album, studio recorded for the first time by Ace (along with 'Cold Gin').  Not my video here, I was a person or two back and dead center stage.

R.I.P. Ace Frehley

Ace Frehley is my all-time favorite rock star, and has been for almost all of my life.  If you've been under a rock recently, he died yesterday at 74 years old.

I had the pleasure to meet Ace twice, both times in the early to mid 90's I think, and I was completely drunk the first time and totally starstruck dumb the second time.  But I've also been lucky enough to see him perform live several times with Kiss and solo twice, up close in clubs.  I can't say much more than I've already written now or have written before.  Ace has been a constant in my life, and will continue to be.

Thank you, Ace Frehley.

Saturday Night's Ace Show

Well, I should never say I'm gonna post the next day. Inevitably, it ends up being a day or two later.

This is a pic that my friend took with his camera phone of me with the Majestic marquee out front. You'll just have to believe me that it says 'Ace Frehley'. It was just too dark to capture a bright sign, I guess.

It turned out to be a fun evening. My friend S.H. and I got downtown a little early to have a few drinks before the show. There turned out to be 2 opening bands, so we had time. We did catch the second band but they were mostly forgettable. Ace was the star tonight. I hit the floor in front of the stage to watch Ace. Like I said last post, I spent the whole show 7 feet in front of his mike stand (the stage was elevated about 3 feet). That's not an exaggeration, I actually thought about it during the show, too far for 6 feet but not as far as 8, 7 feet is what I determined.

The show moved well. No real lulls in the action, and boy, it was LOUD! For such a small place it was very loud. Oh, I loved it at the time, but when I got home my ears were just screaming! Still a tiny bit of a ringing now, almost 2 days later. It's been a long time since that has happened to me after a concert. Probably the last time I saw KISS. They're always very loud and that's one thing Ace obviously still does. I'm not going to recount the songs he played, but he got to most of the hits and some KISS songs. He doesn't lack for any material to draw upon, that's for sure. Off the new CD I know I heard Outer Space, Sister, and maybe Fox On The Run. I wasn't worried about keeping track of what he played, just enjoying the moment with him creating his music right in front of me.

A very nice evening, indeed.
Odds and ends and afterthoughts after the break:

UDO is on Tour

U.D.O. has opened their 'Dominator' Tour in Oslo a few days ago on Monday. Here are the opening two songs for the show, as well as being the opening two songs on the new album. Good stuff, not even the best they do.

It is with a far-fetched wish that I ever get to see them. I feel fortunate that I've seen Accept twice on the Metal Heart tour, back in '85 or so. Back then I was aware of who I was seeing, and appreciative of their music (They - Kicked - A$$!!)! But this band is not american, and not appreciated here. So, of course they play where they are, essentially the other side of the earth. To be able to enjoy Udo and Stefan, with Fitty, Igor, and Francesco, right in front of me playing... well, that would be about as good as the Ace Frehley show to me. They Rock!

Really, I never thought I would go to an Ace Frehley solo show here in Madison, since that would be something good for me (things don't usually happen for me like that). U.D.O. would be a band that I would love to see, but never expect to. W.A.S.P., as well, spends most time overseas these days (I saw them on their first big tour with KISS, in late 1984 I think. Americans seem to be missing out on some good things, however, everything is so niched these days that ... yada yada my opinion is long past irrelevant and I've had too many drinks to explain.

I'm gonna like the music I like and appreciate the rare live performances that I find fewer and farther that much more.

Weekend Football Insulation Ace

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and start to the week.  I know I've not posted the last few days.  My back had been acting up on me, so I wasn't up for most usual things.  I considered another 'filler' post, but I have done alot of those lately, posting almost every day.

I didn't do much over the weekend, except watch football.  I did get handrails up around our little stairs and landing area.  Now I need to see if I can find a stain to reasonably match the trim in the house or else I'm thinking of just spray painting them with some kind of offwhite semi-gloss or gloss.  I may stop at Ace Hardware tomorrow to look, or then again, maybe this weekend.  While Ace is on my way home, the traffic at that time of day at that area....  hmm, I'll probably wait for the weekend.

Much more after the break.

Just Home... Ace Concert

I just got home from the Ace Frehley concert at the Majestic here in Madison.

WOW!

It was alot of fun! I spent the whole show about 7 feet front and center in front of the Spaceman himself! I'll say more tomorrow after my ears have stopped ringing. Good night.

Updates postponed...

Well, I was planning a bigger post tonight but our friends B & Z finally got us to go out to one of the neighborhood taverns tonight. It was fun! Usually mondays are a pretty low key night for us. Now it's almost 8:30 and we need dinner then bed.

I received the new Ace Frehley album friday, post coming soon. Weekend activities with the Andrew Bird concert review also coming soon. And my views on the Packers and Badgers will wait.

Good night for now.

Latest LIVE Listening Pleasure 34 - Buckethead

In keeping with my resolve since I turned 50 to get out and see more live music from touring acts that I would enjoy, I went out Tuesday night to the Majestic Theater to see Buckethead perform.  Buckethead is a very respected guitar player who has made several lists such as top ten shredders and top 25 weirdest guitarists, among others.  He has performed with many other acts but is probably best known as being a guitar player in Guns and Roses from 2000 to 2004, and his work was also on their 2008 album, Chinese Democracy.  He is also famous for wearing a white mask on his face and a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket on his head.

He performed with no opening act and no backing band, but played to a track most of the two hour show utilizing lots of effects most of the time, but did play pretty clean guitar at times as well.  I have some of his releases, but I don't listen to them enough to recognize any of his all-instrumental songs.  And he is a very prolific guitarist, having released 307 albums overall.  I had decided to go to this show due to the lack of other shows coming that I wanted to see.  I do enjoy his style of play and I am glad I went, but I also came down with a miserable cold starting Friday that I probably got from someone in that crowd.

Overall it was a good show, though.  Aside from his guitar playing he also does a mean 'robot' and even performed with nunchucks at one point before handing out what looked like dollar-store gifts to the fans in front.  Always handing them out carefully, never tossing or throwing into the crowd.  (That video is here, and a there's a couple more on my YouTube channel.)  Even as he left the stage before and after the encore it was with just a little wave as he was led off by his roadie.  His odd behavior reminded me of autism, but I've not read a word about him being autistic so I gather it's just another part of his act.

I'll be back at the 600-person capacity Majestic in July for a show that I'm really looking forward to - Diamante is coming as opener for the band New Years Day.  (There's a third band playing first that I'll have to look into later.)  I like both, but I'm a much bigger fan of Diamante.  Enough so that I even bought an opera box for the show.  Now I could just use a friend who likes the same kind of music to go to shows with!

Latest Listening Pleasure 38 - Wargasm UK

Shortly after finding and really liking their music I wrote an LLP Bonus post about them.  At the time, they only had 7 songs out and I felt they needed to do more to merit a full LLP post.  That was in February, and now, after several months of their music being at the top of my mental playlist, I just can't deny how much I've been enjoying their music ever since - and they have two new songs out since then, so they have been active.  Ladies and gentlemen, number 38, Wargasm UK!

Wargasm UK - Pyro Pyro

There's not a whole lot more I can say about them than what I did before.  But live shows have started up again, so they're getting their chops by playing out more, at least one festival from what I've seen with more dates scheduled soon.  And this make me happy because more live shows means more live concert videos to watch.  Always my preference.

Wargasm UK, Live at Download Festival Pilot 2021 - Backyard Bastards

Watching this live video reminds me how content I am these days to watch from afar, but they sure bring the energy and the crowd gives it right back.  I may be too old to be right down front anymore, but I still enjoy it lots.  Keep it coming, Sam and Milkie!

50 Bands I've Seen Live

Here's an idea from Delcatto at Tears Before Pearls. Let me see if I can remember 50 bands that I've seen:

1 Kiss
2 Ace Frehley

18 White Zombie
19 Accept
20 Bon Jovi
21 Garbage
22 Judas Priest
23 Krokus
24 Loudness
25 Motley Crue
26 Wendy O Williams
27 Ozzy Osbourne
28 Widowmaker
29 Slaughter
30 Winger

43 Ben Folds Five
44 The Murmers
45 Alice Cooper
46 Beck
47 Dementia
48 Anthrax
49 Kula Shaker
50 Primus

I've sprained my brain right now trying to remember enough to get to 50. There are still several I'm forgetting. I can think of about half a dozen that were pretty good 20 years ago, but nothing since, and now I can't remember the names. And there are some on the list I'm not fans of but they were the opening act. So for tonight my memory fails me but I will update at least 2 more later, when they come to me.

Edit: Well, I managed to finish off the 50, I'm positive I'm forgetting many others, but that's enough. It was fun, then and now.

Faster Pussycat - The Power and the Glory...

Faster Pussycat has been back on my radar for a few years now.  Taime Downe (singer) is the only original member from their heyday in the late 80's to early 90's, but he brought the sleaze rock band back with 2006's 'The Power and the Glory Hole.'  A very strong album, I still play it often.  They've spent alot of time touring since, but haven't been here in Madison yet.  Last year I mentioned  that I would jump at the chance to see Ace Frehley again, then a couple months later, it happened! Fingers crossed!

Here's the best live version of the title track of that album that I've found.  If you can't tell it's nsfw by the title then just don't play it.

Pic Dump 37

For the thirty-seventh time, here are all the pics that I have come across in the course of my internet travels that caught my fancy enought to save since the last dump to share with you now.  Same rules apply:  Some may be NSFW, click pic for original size if different and much, much more after the break.  Enjoy!
Here's mine: "In the wake of Woodstock, the entire music business was gripped with what could best be described as Festival Fever."  Ace Frehley - No Regrets, 2011.  'Festival Fever!'  Oh Boy!

As always, many thanks to the fine site on 'My Favorite Sites' list on the right!

Concert Checklist Trend

Apparently, this checklist has been trending on social media of some sort, I read about it on a website.  Similar to the '50 Bands I've Seen Live' trend that I posted back in the first year of this blog, I felt the urge to give my two cents on this one.

  1. First concert: Dio (w/ Dokken)
  2. Last concert: ZZ Top
  3. Worst concert: Tesla
  4. Loudest concert: Ace Frehley
  5. Best concert: Pink Floyd
  6. Seen the most: Kiss
  7. Most surprising: Beck
  8. Next concert: ??
  9. Wish I could've seen: The original Kiss in the seventies
Those are my answers.  It's hard to recollect them all, and now I've seen so many online it's hard to separate them from in-person sometimes.  At my age and after the pandemic now, I expect most of my live concerts to be online.  I'm not saying I won't go out to a show, just that it's going to take a lot to get me to do it.  Livestreams are easier, cheaper, more options and just more comfortable.

Care to share your list?

May This-And-Thats

DSCF4729It's been some time since I just typed and let things out.  In fact, I haven't really felt like writing anything in a while, I guess.  Other than my Ace Frehley LLP post, I've mostly written just to post pictures to keep up with our garden and spring flora.  Starting to type and not knowing exactly what will come out can be - and has been - fun and interesting.  And, well, life is ever forward so shall we get started?

  • I reached out to 8 contractors, heard back from 6, and received quotes from 3.  We know who we want to hire for the roof project, but as of now we are waiting for the quote for the porch project from the same company.  It will affect how we go about financing, if we do just the roof right now or both projects.  The roof project is the highest priority for us, the porch will be pricier.  Neighbor Dave tells me the porch was being built at the same time his deck was, about 1973.  He also said he knows it was not permitted, and after taking a closer look at the construction, there is no doubt in my mind no permits were pulled and no inspection took place.  It's not in danger of falling apart, but no inspector would approve of the building method.
  • I used Bayer Season Long Weed Control on my lawn a couple weeks ago.  I've been sold on the product since it finally got rid of many tiny weeds in my front lawn last spring, I think.  It's the kind of thing that you hook up to the hose and spray the lawn.  I did my full front and back lawns, and I even did a strip of my neighbor's lawn beside our driveway.  I've had issues in the past with crabgrass and other weeds coming down her side and getting into my yard.  The only thing is I got a little too close to a couple peony bushes, a small one of ours and a very large one of the neighbors.  The plants got all curly and sick looking in just a day and they remain that way.  Thankfully it only affected a part of my neighbor's plant, but I think our peony is done for this year, though I do think it will come back.
  • Before I forget, Kate was in California a couple weeks ago for a work conference.  This has happened before in years past.  It's during the week so with work and chores it goes by quick.  Then, just as the cats and I start getting used to her not being there - she's back.  It freaked Basil out quite a bit last year but he seemed to take it better this year.  I was also glad to have her back, even though we both seemed a bit testy with each other for a few days for some reason.  We also have an anniversary coming up, kind of a milestone one, too.  No, I don't think they're related, but I do have to start looking for some kind of gift!
  • Spring is finally here.  I was so anxious for it to be here this year.  I want it to be comfortable without a coat outside and I want to get the outside fully cleaned up and ready for summer.  Aside from some of the usual projects, all that is left is plant shopping and that will most likely happen next weekend.  We had frost warnings the last couple nights and the high temperatures still are not enough to have all the windows open comfortably.  I hope we get some of that all-day open-window time before it inevitably becomes central air time.  For the time being, the heat remains on.
  • Another thing about spring, and this year especially, the lilacs burst with blooms and at the same time the lily of the valley is starting to peak.  I brought in some of each yesterday making the the house very floral scented.  We had to put them in different rooms to spread it out a little.  They both smell so nice and are so fleeting in spring we must enjoy it while we can.

DSCF4727
Well, when I sat I only had a vague idea of what I might say and look at all the stuff that came out.  Now, I better wrap it up before it gets too much longer.  I'm sure I'll have forgotten something, I always do, but I also don't want to make a post so long no one reads it.

It will be another summer of projects and activities so I'm sure I won't run out of anything to write about anytime soon.  Thanks for reading.

Ta ta for now.

Latest Listening Pleasure 39 - The Warning

I can't remember exactly where or when I first learned of The Warning, but it was about 2 or 3 months ago and probably while in some Youtube rabbit hole.  They are the Villarreal sisters from Monterrey, Mexico.  Yes, sisters - Daniela, Paulina and Alejandra - and surprisingly young when you see some of their earlier videos as kids, but even then you could see the talent.

I found they first got some popularity from an early cover of Metallica's song Enter Sandman back in 2014, and they actually collaborated on that song for Metallica's Blacklist album that came out last year.  They've been writing their own music now for a while and have a couple releases out there, and a new song coming out next Friday called Money.  And they do seem to have lots of fans already, with several Youtube channels posting all sorts of videos with and about them, even livestreams of their shows.

There's a 5 minute documentary video they released a few days ago and shows their charm and growth, musical and otherwise, including talking with the parents.  Unfortunately, though, it doesn't look like they allow embedding so you can see it here, I recommend it.

Instead, here's the latest video and single by The Warning, Disciple.

What seemed to catch me first was the voice.  I like a strong, female rock voice (think Lzzy Hale or Liv Sin).  Then to see her play guitar and sing live was impressive, while the younger sisters were no slouches, either.  Plus, I must admit, I was intrigued by the novelty of what were young kids playing good songs well.  They've grown up a bit now and play tight and loud and have some very good songs out.  I think the best is their most recent EP, Mayday, but that's to be expected as its the first I heard.  I have one earlier album from 2018, Queen of the Murder Scene, that is also very good and a little more diverse.

And if you know me, you know I love the live stuff.  Here's a great livestreamed show I watched almost a month ago.  Live, from Saltillo, Mexico; The Warning.

If they continue their current trajectory I think we'll all be hearing more of them in the future.  They're just about there, and I think one 'hit' song just might break it wide open for them.  Maybe I shouldn't have predicted that, I just know what I like and find interesting to listen to and lately this has been at the top of my list.  It's always fun when I find my next latest-greatest!

Latest Listening Pleasure 30 - Diamante

Diamante is a performer that just over a month ago I saw the album cover and song titles with a two word description - Alt Metal, but I was intrigued so I looked her up on Youtube and I've been playing her CD constantly ever since.  This is how I find out about a lot of new music, and I still haven't seen any reference to her on any of the music sites I visit daily.  Well, here's your notice, because I think you may be hearing more about her soon.  I hope so, anyway, because I really enjoy her voice and music.

Coming In Hot is her debut album, just out last month, June 15, but she has put out a few EPs of earlier material and then songs off the album leading up to the release.  She is a self proclaimed 80's metal fan despite her very young age so that may explain why I find the music appealing, but judge for yourself.  There is a series of short videos of her giving some background, the first of which is here.  She is the daughter of an Italian father and Mexican mother, born in Boston, Mass.  That's interesting right there.  Below is her video for the upbeat and fun title track, but she also has videos for the songs Haunted, Had Enough, and the ballad I'm Sorry as well as several lyric videos and even a collaboration with current tourmates Bad Wolves.  That's a lot of videos for an artist's debut album,  She is obviously well-backed by someone who believes in her, or she's already six figures in debt at age 21.

Diamante - Coming In Hot
(I like that she includes us older guys in the video.  They still like to rock, too!)

And the ballad, I'm Sorry, is a very good song, but one thing bothers me about it.  She sings 'I wanna say I'm sorry' several times, but never actually says it.  She just says that she wants to say it, that's it, and that's not an apology.  Okay, I'm sorry, my OCD must be acting up...

And if you know me and my OCD then you know I love the live stuff.  When I found her website I saw that she played here in Madison a few weeks before the album came out and before I knew anything about her.  Bummer.  I did find one video of her full half hour set from a few weeks ago, and I've enjoyed it a few times.  Remember the name, I think she may get bigger soon.  Now play the show!
