I've worked 20 of the last 35 hours, not including travel time and lunch breaks. I know some people do more, and I did, too, when I was younger. Overtime sucks now. I can't complain about the money, although we'd get by just fine, thank you. There is a serious management problem when your department is on overtime as much as mine. Overtime should be a stopgap solution, not a long term business plan. And, yes, it has been happening for years - over a decade in this department. There is more I'd like to say, but it would not be appropriate here. I hope it doesn't come to this because I would hate to start over again, but it may be time to look for work elsewhere...
I am not a 'happy camper' with my bosses or my job right now, and I foresee no changes coming.

Having been there myself I can empathise with your situation.
I'm surprised your bosses haven't considered at least getting a part timer in or an agency worker. Is it cheaper for them to keep the overtime going?
Unfortuanately it is a very large department of a company that employs thousands of people. It's just become the accepted culture of the department and its leaders. It's been the norm for so long it's just, well, normal for them now. I can't see how it would be cheaper than hiring an extra dozen.
*Unfortunately, I mean.
What a crazy crazy situation. Hope things have eased up since you wrote this.
It's amazing how what one did a couple of decades ago and thought great suddenly doesn't seem that way when you're a bit further down the line, isn't it?
Not just work - I can remember thinking nothing of driving 7 hours (this is the UK remember - 7 hours is one end of the country to the other!) to see someone for the weekend on a Friday night, then coming back again on the Sunday afternoon. now I'd want to go for 2 weeks if getting there and back took that long!
I am a duck, my job is water. I gotta let it roll right off my back!
