This is where our bee swarm from a few weeks ago lived. I killed some chemically and the rest, I believe, moved. The dead grass is from the wood I placed there for about a week.
We may not have them living in our back yard anymore, but there are plenty about. Their numbers seemed to increase but they also seem more sluggish. Perhaps this is their last big party time before they die or hibernate?

Yes, I agree. I think they make the most of the warm weather to gather the last nectar and pollen they can to keep them going over the winter.
I can see what you mean about the problem now! Personally I'd have cut a hole in the top decking and put a super (box with frames for htem to store their gathered honey) on it and collected the honey! But I do have all the necessary kit and I don't have an inquisitive dog!
It's all dirt behind that wood. I find it odd there is an end facing out right there, the rotten wood entrance. I don't know how far in it goes, but it's old enough to be rotting. I may have to do something there to keep the bees from coming back next year.
